STEM Educational Program Content
In order to achieve our mission: “To democratize health, agricultural entrepreneurship and food security through Remotestead’s platform and STEM education. Here we specify how we will deliver the STEM content and education through a Question Based Project Based Learning Platform, often referred to as QD-PBL
What is (QD-PBL)?
(QD-PBL) is defined as question-driven project-based learning. QD-PBL for Remotestead is an instructional approach where an entire unit of study is based on Remotestead’s comprehensive software and hardware solutions to organic food production, apiculture and husbandry.
These questions are designed to bring a (DOK) Depth of Knowledge to the STEM educational program and are completely driven by questions themselves. Questions from a vast majority ranging from a first-grade learner to an adult just starting with the Remotestead’s enriched program and platform.
We start with the questions that drive the education and learning process from start to finish. Anyone who needs to learn can find differentiated levels of learning meeting the needs of all learners. This STEM educational program is multipurposed to fit special education needs as well as learners with little to no educational background in Remotesteading. By participating in this learning learners will learn:
- How to access critical information necessary to understanding the Remotestead platforms. Anywhere from seed production and crop rotation to the software and hardware components that make up the agri-tech proprietary code Remotestead is based on.
- Learners will follow the content questions to develop new ideas, increase learning depth of knowledge and harvest the knowledge of how Remotestead functions; this functioning begs to question how Remotestead produces, grows, leads and develops its code and crops, mixing STEM concepts throughout the learning process.
- In the Remotestead STEM educational program learners will use science, technology, engineering and mathematics to gain knowledge and to produce the necessary output to complete learning. Each component of Remtostead is based on the principles of STEM and each of its disciplines drive home directly what STEM itself stands for.
- Learners actively investigate these core questions over an extended period, culminating in a real-world project. Think of the question as the engine. It creates a “need to know” that drives learners to research, collaborate, and problem-solve.
The Anatomy of Remotestead’s QD-PBL Programs
For our projects to be truly question-driven they rely on several moving parts that transform a standard teaching activity into an active investigation.
We begin with the Driving Question: The heart of the project. It is a provocative list of open-ended, simple and complex questions tied directly to our core academic STEM standards. These questions cannot be answered with a quick Google search but must be harvested with real world knowledge and hands on learning. This is exactly what the Remotestead STEM educational program is all about; giving learners the opportunity to start with a question on paper and then through hands-on real world learning answer those questions in real time with “us” the experts to guide their way.
In the Remotstead STEM educational program we have spent hours crafting the driving questions. We believe that the quality of the entire program stems heavily on the questions themselves. They are written to strike a perfect balance between being kid-friendly, academically rigorous and meant to be understood by every participant no matter their age or educational background.
For you to get a better understanding let’s look at a “Strong Driving Question”.
Strong Driving Question: “How can we design an urban farming space that yields enough fresh food to support our local community?” This question requires understanding STEM concepts such as plant biology, math, budgeting and spatial design.
By shifting the focus to a compelling question, learners naturally develop critical thinking, collaboration and project management skills—all while mastering the foundational content.
Next, the anatomy of Remotestead’s educational program is called the voice and choice: At Remotestead learners aren’t just following a recipe. They have a say in how they investigate the question, design their solutions and present their findings in a natural way. By structuring learning this way our program provides sustained inquiry.
Remotestead’s Sustained Inquiry: A visit to Remotestead may be a one-day activity or several visits through our ongoing learning program. In either scenario learners may spend weeks asking follow-up questions, searching for resources, interviewing “us” the experts and gathering data in person and online.
Embedded in the Remotestead STEM educational content are authentic benchmarks: Remotestead’s projects mirror real-world work. Learners aren’t just making a poster for the teacher; they are creating solutions for an actual audience and community need.
Some of those authentic benchmarks are real world community problems and how to address them such as food insecurity, food deserts and the lack of education around health, nutrition and how healthy organic food is not an option but a desperate need!
Some of our communities authentic benchmarks for example are food insecurity, food deserts and lack of healthy organic food across the St. Louis Metropolitan area.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), there are 71 census tracts classified as food deserts across the St. Louis Metropolitan Area. These are areas where organic local produce is not at all available to the community.
The Data Breakdown
The USDA defines an urban food desert as a low-income tract where at least 33% of the population lives more than one mile away from the nearest full-service grocery store.
- Impacted Population: As of 2026 approximately 18% of the St. Louis regional population (over 769,000 residents) lives within these designated areas.
- Highest Concentration: The food deserts are heavily clustered in North St. Louis City, North St. Louis County (such as Spanish Lake and Ferguson), and parts of the Metro East across the river. Pockets also exist in Southeast St. Louis City.
This crisis has led to 71 pinpoint areas exactly where low-income residents suffer from low food access. In the Remotestead educational STEM programs there is the opportunity to analyze, critique and revise this problem by learning how to sustainably grow, sell and reproduce the homesteading environment in local abandoned lots throughout the St. Louis Metropolitan area turning them into self sustaining decentralized Remotesteads. In our program learners receive constructive cooperative feedback from peers or mentors and “us” the experts. We at Remotestead may not be able to solve the entire problem of food insecurity but we have the opportunity to give it all we have in order to attempt to bridge the gap.
Learning with this kind of reciprocity gives them the opportunity to refine their learning in specific ways that are the takeaways from Remotestead’s STEM educational programs. The goal is for learners to understand the community’s needs and to become active contributors to solving the nutritious food problem and this all starts with the Driving Question.
Traditional Projects vs. QD-PBL
It is easy to confuse a traditional “hands-on project” with authentic Project-Based Learning. The biggest difference is whether the project is the “dessert” (something done at the very end to show what was learned) or the “main course” (the vehicle through which the learning happens).
At Remotestead we serve the main course and scaffold learning to ensure that each participant and learner understands the basic and in-depth concepts of how a community agri-tech project like Remotestead works. This learning is communicated through a series of questions. Remotestead provides learners a headstart to revealing the main course in small fork size bites.
Let’s review some concepts on how Remotestead’s STEM Educational program operates.
The Role of the Project Based learning program is to show what was already taught. The actual context and process through which the material is learned. In our case it is taught through a guided list of complex and simple questions formed around the components of how Remotestead works, operates and succeeds. There is a defined starting point that starts when each participant steps foot on the land. This may be by proposing the question of what came first: the chicken or the egg? At Remotestead there are 20+ heads of birds ranging from chickens, ducks and turkeys which makes this a valid and intriguing question.
On the other hand learners and participants need and want to know how long to leave on their watering systems to grow produce in the greenhouse. All of this knowledge first starts as a question that guides learning at any and every stage of the process.
Instructors and experts in agriculture, technology and education deliver the content then assigns a small group or single participant to work simultaneously throughout a messy, real-world Driving Question like food insecurity.
One of the many focuses of Remotestead is to build a linchpin through the questions that are proposed. Since we are the writers of these questions we have designed them to have a direct focus. By following the questions directions they build a specific end product, learning how to Remotestead. Learners investigate the possibilities to solve a simple or complex problem by collecting new information to answer the questions. The audience for our question based learning is not just classmates or a teacher but there is a public audience filled with community members and other learners in the program.
Community Impact on Learning
When designing our Question-Driven PBL STEM educational program around food access, understanding the systemic “community impact” is exactly what elevates the content from a basic science or social studies lesson into a transformative, real-world investigation.
In our QD-PBL framework, the community impact isn’t just background information—it is the very reason the driving question matters to all learners and contributors.
Driving questions lead to solving the problem at hand. We at Remotestead plan to address the intersection of where food insecurity, food deserts and a lack of healthy nutrition shapes a wider problem for the community.
1. When a community lacks food security, the entire environment is directly altered. Data from international and national assessments (like PISA and *No Kid Hungry*) show that food poverty is one of the most substantial non-academic barriers to educational achievement. Low academic achievement means a low academic performance, lack of access to high income jobs, the inability to secure housing, behavioral disorders, mental health disorders and the list unfortunately goes on and on. It’s a problem.
2. Nutritional deprivation directly hinders cognitive development, working memory and concentration. Statistically people who face chronic hunger face more obstacles such as adverse health conditions, chronic disease and health risks. This creates heightened vulnerability to mortality and compromised mental health and when compared to securely nourished peers they often get caught in systemic generational poverty. This is what Remotestead wants to see the end to.
3. Inability to provide healthy nutritious food to the table also leads to behavioral and psychosocial stress. Hunger triggers systemic stress and anxiety, in young children as well as in adults this manifests as reduced self-regulation, hyperactivity in children and difficulty to continue living in good health for adults. For example many children consume up to half of their daily caloric intake through school breakfast and lunch programs. Not being able to access affordable organic nutritious foods at home also leads to a breakdown of adults’ ability to perform well in the workplace, care for sick or elderly family members and live a full life.
The Mechanics of a Food Desert Trap
Many adults and children have zero geographic or financial autonomy; they cannot travel miles outside of their neighborhood to buy fresh produce. They rely entirely on what is immediately accessible. With Remotestead not only will the community have access to healthy and nutritious foods they will also have the opportunity to sell their harvest in a co-sponsored entrepreneurial setting providing extra income to low income families.
A Remotestead quarter (0.25) acre of land can produce over ten thousand 10,000 to sixteen 16,000 pounds of food and one to two thousand 1,000-2,000 pounds of honey. Families that sell some of their harvest directly to consumers can generate up to thirty $30,000 to sixty $60,000+ thousand dollars per year. This is the direct impact that Remotestead projects have within it’s community impact and STEM educational programming.
In the St. Louis Metropolitan area there is also a cost and calorie mismatch. In areas lacking traditional grocery stores families are often forced to rely on corner stores or fast-food value menus. These options provide cheap, shelf-stable, calorie-dense foods that are completely stripped of micronutrients leading to the paradox of high obesity rates alongside severe nutritional deficiency. Through Remotstead teaching and providing a solution to these problems Remotestead is able to help solve these problems for future generations to come.
Connecting the Impact to Remotstead’s Driving Questions
To help finalize Remotestead’s educational content the above community impact anchors our QD-PBL learning concept. For example, our STEM education programs’ deliverables help to structure learning so that learners are actively solving a piece of the community issue.
The Community Impact Addressed
Wrapping up, remember our first driving question: “How can we design a Remotestead to ensure our families and community members have access to fresh, healthy food everyday?” Also, “How can we build a sustainable agri-tech business plan that brings affordable, fresh food directly into local food deserts? These questions not only drive curiosity but are the foundations of what Remotestead was created to do, fulfilling our mission to “democratize health, agricultural entrepreneurship and food security through Remotestead’s platform and STEM education”.
Remotestead addresses and directly impacts the communities in which we serve by;
- Directly targeting the lack of fresh, local micronutrients while building positive social-emotional connections, entrepreneurial capabilities around organic nutritious shared food production.
- Engineering indoor and outdoor vertical farming systems that maximize food production using minimal space, water and other resources.
- Utilizing STEM concepts by exploring technological solutions to the spatial constraints of urban food deserts, connecting biology, geometry and software engineering to food security.
- Confronts the economic and logistical barriers of food transportation, challenging learners to integrate sustainable agriculture with entrepreneurial problem-solving.
- Provide a vital tool for community health, equity and resilience right where our learners live addressing the community impact on providing an intersection of food insecurity, food deserts and a lack of healthy nutrition that shapes a wider community across the St. Louis Metropolitan area.
